James McMillan.

James McMillan was born in Scotland and moved to North America in about 1803 and was employed by the "North West Company" as a clerk. In 1808 he joined David Thompson in an expedition across the Rocky mountains.

Astoria, a fur trading post was founded in 1811 by John Jacob Astor, a German-born US immigrant .who had hoped to beat out his British rivals and develop the Pacific Northwest fur trade for the US.

Astor's partners in the Pacific Fur Company were mostly Canadian and on October 1813, James Mcmillan and others negotiated the take over of the company and it became part of the North West Company.
